I really enjoyed this sequel and thought Gretchen Powell Fox did a great job expanding both the emotional stakes and the world itself. Splintered Kingdom definitely leans heavier into the romance and character dynamics, which worked well for me because Cedric and Elyria continue to have fantastic chemistry. The tension between them stayed strong throughout the book, and I appreciated that their relationship still felt layered and complicated instead of overly perfect.
The found family aspect remains one of my favorite parts of the series. The group dynamics, loyalty, and quieter character moments helped balance some of the darker and more intense scenes. There were also a few reveals later in the book that genuinely surprised me and pulled me back in hard heading into the final stretch.
My biggest issue was the pacing. There were sections in the beginning that dragged a bit and felt slower than they needed to be, especially compared to the stronger middle and ending. Still, once the story picked up, I was fully invested again.
Overall, this was a solid 4 star read for me. It deepened the story, strengthened the relationships, and left me interested to see where the series goes next. That ending definitely made me curious for book three.
