Source: Edelweiss and the PublisherDianna Is Her
Let’s just get this out of the way... Dianna is one of the most compelling female leads I’ve read in a long damn time. She’s morally gray, emotionally volatile, sarcastic to a fault, and absolutely feral in her love for her sister. And that combo? It works. I mean, I didn’t just root for her, I believed her. She isn’t soft. She isn’t easy. And she damn sure doesn’t need saving. But she’d burn the world down for the people she loves, and I will forever be a sucker for that kind of chaos fueled devotion.
This deluxe edition features a bonus chapter that seriously punched me in the feels. Kaden’s perspective adds so much more to his character, (finally, we get to sit inside his head and see how he really feels about Dianna). It gave their connection way more emotional weight and made a few of his colder choices in book one feel a little more... layered. This chapter sets the stage for where the rest of the series is headed, and I am ALL in.
The World Is Massive, And I Was Obsessed!
If you're into sweeping world building with ancient wars, shadowy realms, and captivating gods and goddesses, welcome home. Amber V. Nicole didn't just build a fantasy world, she handed us the keys and said “try not to get lost mmkay?" Was it a little overwhelming at first? Yeah. But once you settle in, the payoff is huge.
The pacing is heavy upfront. I won’t lie , some readers might find it a bit dense in the early chapters while the world gets pieced together. But for me, it never dragged. I was locked in. Fully consumed. And completely unbothered by the setup because I could feel the story winding tighter with every page.
Give Me Kaden... But Make Him A Bit More... Clear?
I do wish we had stronger physical descriptions of a few key characters. Kaden especially, for a character with so much power and presence, I wanted to see him more clearly. Dianna and the others felt more vivid, but there were moments where I had to fill in the blanks myself. That said, nothing about this took away from how magnetic the story was. I was too busy bingeing the entire thing to care for long.
Minor Typos, Major Talent
There were a handful of misspells and editing hiccups, not uncommon in ARC copies, and nothing that pulled me out of the story. (Blame it on my OCD). Honestly? The writing is so good I barely blinked. This is the kind of book that demands an immediate 2nd read, not just because of the plot twists and layered lore, but because Amber’s writing sneaks up on you. It’s sharp. It’s brutal. It’s beautiful.
Final Thoughts: Full Tilt Obsession
I devoured The Book of Azrael in one sitting and immediately bought the rest of the series. This deluxe edition was worth every second of my time. The storytelling is powerful and unrelenting in the best way. The characters feel real, raw, and unforgettable. And the bonus chapter sealed the deal for me, this series is going to wreck me, (and is) and I am SO here for it.
If you’ve been looking for your next suspenseful dark romantasy obsession, this is it y'all. Don’t walk... Run.
Thank you to Edelweiss and the Publisher for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own, and this one? I’d scream it from the rooftops.
