Source: NetGalley and the PublisherA Graceless Heart pulled me straight into Renaissance Florence with its mix of history, danger, and magic. Ravenna is a sculptress keeping her forbidden gift hidden while trying to protect her brother and survive the Pope’s war against powers that should never exist. She is strong, decisive, and never afraid to face the consequences of her choices. Ibañez’s writing brings the world to life with gorgeous detail that made me feel like I was walking the streets of Florence myself.
What stood out most was the level of historical research that shines through the story. You can tell Isabel Ibañez dug deep into the Medici and Pazzi era, into the cities, and even into the language itself. As someone who loves history, I could really appreciate that dedication. The inclusion of a young Leonardo da Vinci was such a clever addition and gave the book an extra spark of authenticity.
The romance is a slow burn, growing naturally alongside the danger and intrigue, and it works perfectly with the stakes of the story. Because the plot is grounded in real events, the betrayals and political games carry even more weight. While a few sections move at a slower pace and the magic system feels more mysterious than clearly explained, once the story hits its stride, it sweeps you right along.
And let me just say, it is rare to find a fresh twist in this genre, but Ibañez delivered one. I will not spoil it here, but when you come across it, you will know. Brava to her for carving out something original in a space where too many stories can start to feel the same.
Overall, this is a richly layered historical fantasy with love, power, and intrigue at its core. If you enjoy immersive settings, complex choices, and romance threaded with danger, A Graceless Heart deserves a spot on your list.
